Supply of heat equal to the requirements of 6,000 apartments
San Donato Milanese (Mi), 25 May 2021 – Eni and A2A have signed a 20-year agreement for the supply of heat generated at the Bolgiano facility of Enipower (100% controlled by Eni) and which will be used to fuel Milan's district heating network.
Thanks to this agreement, it will be possible to supply Milan’s network with heat cogenerated with a low environmental impact and totalling about 54 GWh a year, equivalent to the average annual requirements of approximately 6,000 families.
A2A Heat and Services – an A2A Group company and leader in Italy in the district heating sector – will build a thermal exchange and re-pumping station close to the Eni facility, which will enable the transfer of the heat made available by Eni through the A2A district heating network from San Donato Milanese to Milan itself. The creation of the heat transfer infrastructures, together with the study of innovative technologies, fall within the “LombHe@t - Hub Energetico Lombardo” project, funded by Regione Lombardia in the sphere of the “Call Hub” tender whose aim was to identify heating solutions with a low environmental impact designed to reduce the effects of climate change and improve the quality of air in the city.
The Municipality of San Donato Milanese, which promoted the project and made available a parking area in a road (Via Maritano) close to the Enipower site for the construction of the heat re-pumping station, agreed some compensatory work with A2A Heat and Services: the extension and resurfacing of the existing parking lot and the creation of a green area in the centre of the road.
For A2A, district heating is an important element in terms of sustainability and has already entered phase 4.0, which foresees the increasing use of renewable sources and the recovery of heat from production activities. Moreover, A2A has already created connections between its network and some important industrial sites in the Brescia area, enabling the recovery of about 45 GWh a year of heat from industrial processes, equivalent to the average annual requirement of more than 5,000 families.
This agreement bears witness to the commitment of Eni and A2A to the promotion of environmental protection in synergy with the areas they serve. For Eni, in fact, the agreement is a further step on its irreversible journey of transformation towards a zero-carbon-emission future, exploiting an integrated business model and the development of innovative low-carbon solutions, all within the ambit of the circular economy. In the last seven years, Eni has launched a new business model, a new mission and a long-term strategy which combines economic-financial, environmental and social sustainability with the aim of speeding up the energy transition and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
